USA Triathlon’s Florida Region Paratriathlon Championship

Clermont, FL – On Saturday, March 23, 2013, the Great Clermont Triathlon will host the Florida Region’s third annual Paratriathlon Championship. Held at Lake Minneola in Clermont, Florida, the event is expected to contribute to the growth of the sport of paratriathlon in Florida.

Interest in paratriathlon is at an all-time high. The sport continues to grow following a December 2010 announcement that it will debut at the Paralympic Summer Games in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. A leader on the international paratriathlon scene, the United States recently won the medal count at the 2012 ITU Paratriathlon World Championships with 13 medals. The sport of paratriathlon in the Florida Region has experienced significant growth over the past several years. With numerous training camps and clinics leading to this race, the paratriathlon program has introduced at least 40 disabled veterans and physically challenged athletes to multisport for the first time, while reinforcing paratriathlon skills and participation among experienced athletes.

Saturday’s sprint triathlon will consist of a 440-yard swim, 10-mile bike and a 3-mile run. Many of the athletes will be competing and setting benchmarks in order to qualify for the National Championship in Austin, Texas.
